the presidential race, the murder of four americans, including the u.s. ambassador in benghazi, libya. the wave of anti-american protests and violence now sweeping the globe. for more on what happened and why, let's bring in the u.s. ambassador to the united nations, dr. susan rice. dr. rice, thank you for joining us. >> first of all, what is the latest on who these attackers were at the embassy or at the consulate in benghazi? we're hearing that the libyans are arresting people. they're saying some people were from outside the country and some even al qaeda ties. what's the latest information? >> jake, first of all, it's important to know that there's an fbi investigation that has begun and it will take some time to be completed. that will tell us with certainty what transpired. but our current assessment, is that in fact what began as a spontaneous not a premeditated response to what had transpired in cairo, there was a violent protest that was undertaken in reaction to this video that was disseminated. we believe that folks in benghazi, a small number of people came to the consulate to repli
consulate in benghazi. the main building of the consulate was quickly on fire. at least four of the americans are believed to have died from smoke inhalation. no one was shot. for more than five hours, after the attack, the state department could not confirm ambassador stevens' whereabouts. his body was not recovered for 12 hours. >> libyans helped some of our diplomats find safety and carried ambassador stevens' body to the hospital where we trajically learned that he had died. >> reporter: the president emphasized the libya attack was carried out by a rogue group of militants and won't damage the u.s. relationship with the libyan government which vowed its cooperation. a terror group affiliated with al qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. officials believe it was a pre-planned attack, possibly timed to the september 11th anniversary. and not linked to an anti-muslim film that sparked a large, angry protest at the u.s. embassien cairo on tuesday. >> this is an attack that should shock the conscience of people of all faiths around the world. >> reporter:ll americans i

and terrifying scene. 20 gun-wielding attackers, storming the american consulate in benghazi overnight. nearly a dozen americans were inside, guarded only by libyan security. for nearly 20 minutes, the libyan guards exchanged fire with the attackers. and hurled a firebomb inside. the militants burned down at least one building. ambassador stevens was either killed by smoke inhalation, or more likely in a car trying to escape with two guards, which may have been hit by a mortar. the other american was killed from smoke inhalation. ambassador stevens is a long-serving diplomat. widely respected and passionate about libya. he was there during the revolution, serving as the american representative to the transitional national council. earlier in the day tuesday, protesters breached the walls of the u.s. embassy in cairo, tearing down the american flag and ripping it to shreds. raising a black flag reading, there is no god but allah. u.s. officials fear both incidents are in response to this low-budget, anti-muslim film. it's so controversial in the middle east, abc news is not showing it. the movi
